Don Conti Cigars are created from tobacco fields of rare caliber. Located in arguably the most fertile area in the country, our tobacco is grown under the guardianship of the Dominican Tobacco Institute in the province of Santiago. Here, in the heart of the mountainous Cibao Valley, is perched the municipality of Villa Gonzalez. It is in Villa Gonzalez, at the base of the highest mountain, (Diego de Ocampo) where our fields can be found.
Tobacco grown in the Dominican Republic is divided into four growing zones. Zones A and B are considered optimal for tobacco cultivation. Zone C and the sub-zone are less ideal. Surprisingly, many top cigar producers grow their tobacco in zone C and the sub-zone, as land is financially much more reasonably priced. Don Conti Cigar fields are all located in zones A and B.
The Dominican Tobacco Institute, also located in Villa Gonzalez, plays a critical role in the production of tobacco at Don Conti Cigars. In addition to providing growers with professional assistance and necessary supplements for their fields, the institute performs crucial soil fertility testing. Without these tests as a barometer, the health of our soil would suffer.
Once our tobacco leaves are harvested, someone must oversee the very important process of choosing which leaves of tobacco can be utilized for our premium cigars. This is no simple undertaking. The ability to distinguish when tobacco is perfectly cured takes years of training. This job falls to the eyes of our head field supervisor, a master craftsman who has over thirty years experience in spotting the best tobacco, as well as a clear understanding of all aspects of tobacco manufacturing.
Don Conti Cigars are created from three key components. The filler, the largest part of the cigar; the binder, tobacco used to hold the filler together; and the wrapper, or outer skin, essential to the character of our cigars and used to enclose the filler and binder. Each of these ingredients is composed of tobacco leaf.
Many cigar manufacturers age their tobacco as long as twelve or even eighteen years. We at Don Conti Cigars are convinced such a long period of aging only causes tobacco to lose much of its body. We age our tobacco for just four to six years and believe it plays a large part in the complexity of flavor in our cigars.
All Don Conti Cigars are made completely by hand. No machines are used during this process. All of our cigars are rolled by accomplished torcedores (literally, “those who twist”) with years of professional experience rolling premium cigars. Once rolled, cigars are then stowed neatly in unique cedar boxes constructed by hand in the small village of Ceiba de Madera, where they are then ready to be shipped to you.
We encourage you to sample our exquisitely crafted cigars so you may experience the difference for yourself. We are firm believers in the superiority of Don Conti Cigars and are eager to share with you what we proudly believe is a cigar of world class proportions.
